고산 스님
― 내가 아는 승려들 중에는 술도 마시고 고기도 먹는다. 이들은 "계율은 작은 것이다. 계율에 매여선 안 된다. 이를 뛰어넘어야 깨달음과 무애(無碍)의 경지에 이른다"고 말한다.
"부처님께서 '이치는 금방 깨달으나, 다생습기(多生習氣·오랜 생에 걸쳐 몸에 밴 습관)는 금방 없앨 수 없다'고 했다. 설사 계율을 안 지키는 처사도 금방 깨닫고, 소 잡는 백정도 소 잡는 칼을 들고도 부처님 법문 한마디에 깨닫는다. 깨닫는 이치는 그렇다 해도, 다생습기는 남아 있다. 바람이 그쳤지만 물결이 계속 출렁이는 것과 같은 이치지. 이런 고로 서서히 없애는 것이다."
